El gobierno de Puerto Rico, dirigido por Alejandro García Padilla, encabezó una reunión clave con los sectores políticos con respecto a la deuda del país que supera los 72 mil millones de dólares y que el gobernador calificó como «impagable».
«La deuda es impagable» señaló García Padilla en una entrevista al diario The New York Times, la cual fue publicada el domingo.
El gobernador señaló que tenía la intención de aplazar y renegociar el pago a sus acreedores, mismo que podría ser de hasta cinco años.
La reunión con los sectores políticos para hablar sobre los asuntos fiscales del país fue encabezada por Víctor Suárez, y la presidenta del Banco Gubernamental de Fomento (Central), Melba Acosta.
La divulgación de un informe de exfuncionarios del Fondo Monetario Internacional y del Banco Mundial que fue citado este lunes por medios locales, concluye que la carga de la deuda es insostenible y se proponen amplios recortes para reducir el gasto y sanear las finanzas del gobierno pues tan sólo en la última década, el país la duplicó a la par que el gobierno mostraba problemas de liquidez.

La economía puertorriqueña lleva ocho años de crecimiento negativo, luego de una estrategia de industrialización a marcha forzada que dejó al país en recesión la década pasada.
